Salvation Army Bell Ringing

Members of the Salem Kiwanis Club ring bells for the Salvation Army each year. For about the last three years we have had a little help from Marc Iwahiro's children. They proved to be very good fundraisers and the kettle was stuffed - good news for homeless people in the Salem area.

Members of the Salem Kiwanis Club hosted our annual Christmas Party at Richmond Elementary School on December 12th. Everyone enjoyed pizza and juice. We sat with the children and had a great time chatting and singing Christmas songs together. Santa Claus showed up with candy canes and gifts for each child. It's hard to know whether the children or the Kiwanians enjoyed it most!

Members of the Salem Kiwanis Club and West Salem Kiwanis Club volunteered at the Marion-Polk Foodshare Warehouse sorting and repackaging food to be distributed to local citizens in need of food.

 

Richmond Elementary School BUG Awards

The Salem Kiwanis Club sponsors a BUG Program (Bring Up Grades) for grades Kindergarten through 5th at Richmond Elementary School. On November 16th, 2006, fifteen students were awarded BUG certificates and prizes based on their improvement during the prior grading period. We would like to congratulate the winners!

The Salem Kiwanis Club provides two bikes each year to Richmond Elementary School to be awarded to two lucky students at the end of the school year. In order to be placed into the bike drawing, students must achieve perfect attendance. The bikes are displayed prominently in the cafeteria through the year. We understand attendance is at an all-time high!

Marion County Assessor candidates Richard Kreitzer and Douglas Schmidt spoke at the 10/24 Salem Kiwanis meeting. Each candidate was allotted five minutes to speak, followed by two minutes rebuttal. This was followed by questions and answers from our members.

President Loni held a brainstorming session at Jade Garden Restaurant. Members of the Salem Kiwanis Club brainstormed ideas for leadership of the club. Areas of consideration included membership recruitment and retention, fundraising methods and fundraising. This brainstorming session yielded many great ideas which will be referred to committee chairs and to the Salem Kiwanis Board of Directors.

Members of the Willamette University Circle K Club went to Louisiana and helped with clean up efforts following the 2005 hurricanes. We are please that we were able to support their efforts. They are fine examples of the young adults who align themselves with Kiwanis International sponsored programs. We are very proud of their efforts to help the people of Louisiana.

The 91st annual Kiwanis International Convention was held in Montreal, Canada. Transportation was via the Metro Subway system. Photos above include the convention exhibit area, Pacific Northwest District caucus meeting and a House of Delegates session at the Bell Centre. The last photos are from the Paciifc Northwest District's cruise on the St. Lawrence River.

The Salem Kiwanis Club participated in the third annual Night of Fire benefit car show. The show was produced by the Capitol Auto Group Drag Racing Team and sponsored in part by our club. Loni Barrett showed her 1971 Cougar and Peggy & Terry Klein showed their 1939 Chevy. Proceeds from the show were donated to Becky Hewberger, a single mother of Joshua, who was born with serious birth defects.

Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society's signature annual fundraising event. It is 24 hours, in recognition of the fact that cancer never sleeps. The Salem Kiwanis Club is proud to be a top fundraising team each year in the Salem Relay For Life. The Captain of our team in 2006 was Bill Kincaid. The team was sponsored by C.J. Hansen Co., Inc.

The Salem Kiwanis Club meeting on 5/23/06 was hosted by Richmond Elementary School. During this meeting first graders from Room 5 performed two songs for us. They were great! Principal Jim Hicks and Community Education Coordinator Gail Case told us how our support at Richmond Elementary School has significantly improved student attendance. Salem Kiwanis Club also contributes to beautification/building projects, student mentoring and hosts an annual Christmas Party with pizza and gifts for the children.
