The
Salem Kiwanis Club is pleased to sponsor the
Kiwanis Bring Up Grades 'BUG' Program at
Richmond Elementary School. The BUG Program was President
Loni Barrett's special project for the 2006 - 2007
administrative year. It was officially launched at the
school in November, 2006. The BUG Program was created
to provide academic recognition for students who improve
their grades. This is in contrast with the ordinary academic
recognition given to those students who are able to maintain
a "B" average or better or those who excel beyond their
peers. The BUG Program is a positive reinforcement system
designed to help motivate students who might not otherwise
receive academic awards.

The BUG Program is highly customizable,
based on the school's specific needs. Many of the students
at Richmond Elementary School are Hispanic. A large number
of these students speak English as a second language. The
drop-out rate among these students is over 50% before high
school graduation. We believe the Kiwanis BUG Program can
reach some of these children and perhaps provide that extra
self-esteem and internal motivation required for academic
success, high school graduation. and hopefully moving on to
take advantage of higher education.
Salem
Kiwanis members have been involved at Richmond Elementary
School for many years. We celebrate our 23rd Annual Richmond
Christmas Party on December 12, 2006, complete with pizza,
candy canes and a special visit by Santa Claus with gifts
for the students. We provide attendance incentive prizes
including basketballs, soccer balls and two bicycles each
year. Our members also volunteer at the school mentoring
students and participating in school beautification
projects. We're excited about this new opportunity to have
positive interaction with the children of Richmond
Elementary School through the BUG Program.
CORPORATE PARTNER OPPORTUNITY: The
Salem Kiwanis Club is seeking a corporate partner to help
sponsor the Kiwanis BUG Program at Richmond Elementary
School. This is a low cost, high impact opportunity to make
a difference in these childrens' lives. Interested? Contact
Loni Barrett by
e-mail.
