Public Relations was ranked
among the most important areas of concern but scored lowest
in our 2005 annual assessment.
Our mission is to enhance the
image of The Salem Kiwanis Club both internally and
externally using a variety of internal and external public
relations tools.
Prepared by:
Loni Barrett, 2005 - 2006
Public Relations Chair
Self-Evaluation –
Conduct a self-evaluation to determine what our objectives
are.
Build membership?
Build enthusiasm?
Promote community awareness?
What is our image in the
community?
External Public
Relations
Includes both publicity and
awareness and visibility of what Kiwanis stands for in our
community.
Initial External PR
Evaluation (10/15/05): External Public Relations efforts
are virtually non-existent. The club announcement in the
Statesman Journal expired and has not been appearing. The
CCTV listing is outdated by two years and provides no useful
contact information. The Salem Kiwanis Club is low-key at
events and does not participate in many high profile events
that lend themselves to publicity.
External PR Plan for 2005 –
06:
-
Update the Statesman
Journal listing
-
Update the CCTV listing
-
Conduct a radio community
service announcement
-
Submit press releases for
major events such as spaghetti feed, spelling bee and
any other events where we are partnered with local
entities, thus creating a more newsworthy event.
-
Update club brochures
-
Update club fact sheets
-
Create a large club banner
for display at all events
-
Create a membership
interest display for all events
-
Use club banners at events
such as Light The Night and Relay For Life
-
Look for any other
opportunities to promote Salem Kiwanis
-
Look for opportunities for
incoming links to web site
-
Prepare a list of local
media along with contact information
-
Maintain the Club Locator
listing at
www.kiwanis.org/clubloc/

sheets

Internal Public
Relations
Includes the awareness and
image Kiwanians have of our own club.
Help keep meetings enjoyable
and rewarding. PR Chair overlaps with programs, new member
education, attendance, club bulletins and service
activities.
Make sure the club bulletin is
informative and timely. Must build enthusiasm.
Encourage members to read
Kiwanis Magazine.
Treat members like gold. Retain
them.
Initial Internal PR
Evaluation: Our club does much better with internal
Public Relations. Our weekly bulletin is adequate, but could
be updated with a fresh design and photos. Our weekly e-mail
serves as a reminder of upcoming meetings and events, and
can be used to remind members to invite guests and to
recognize members for their contributions and achievements.
Members are regularly recognized for their contributions
during meetings.
Internal PR Plan for 2005 –
06:
-
More recognition of members
in weekly e-mails
-
Look for opportunities to
recognize members at meetings
-
Continue looking for ways
to recognize members
