Quilt Raffle Fundraising Project

Codi Frazier Memorial Fund - Quilt Raffle Fundraiser

Codi Frazier, honorary junior KiwanianCodi Frazier was an honorary junior Salem Kiwanis member. She had been diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in 2000. During her treatment for cancer her left leg was amputated. Following her treatments and remission of cancer, her mother unexpectedly died. Codi moved in with one of our Kiwanis members (present president), Loni Barrett, who became her caregiver and foster mother. Shortly afterward, she was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes. Despite all the adversities life threw at her, Codi had an extraordinary ability to make the best of whatever life threw at her.

We first met Codi at a Kiwanis meeting when she accompanied her aunt to one of our weekly luncheons. Codi soon became a regular at Kiwanis meetings and at our community service projects. Sadly, Codi was diagnosed with a recurrence of Osteosarcoma in April of 2003. Codi bravely fought for her life as the Salem Kiwanis Club and many others in the Salem and throughout the World rallied behind her. She became friends with many influential people. She spoke out on behalf of the American Cancer Society and served as Grand Master of the 2003 Relay For Life in Marion County. We lost Codi on September 23, 2003. You can visit Codi's web site at www.codibug.com to learn more about her life.

Following Codi's death, Kiwanis President Greg Barrick established the Codi Frazier Memorial Fund within the Salem Kiwanis Club's Projects Budget. This fund is used for donations in memory of Codi, subject to approval by our Board of Directors. Recipients of funding from the Codi Frazier Memorial Fund include Cumming Elementary School for establishment of the "Codi's Corner" special library collection, The American Cancer Society's Relay For Life and The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Light The Night. Funds from the Codi Memorial Fund are generally given to organizations related to serving the needs of children and/or cancer treatment and research.

The Salem Kiwanis Club must conduct fundraising projects to raise funds for all of our projects. This year, Melodie Balmer, wife of our Finance and Fundraising Chairman Dave Balmer created a beautiful,  intricately stitched "Codi Quilt." The Quilt includes some special stitching including Codi's name, horses and the "Codi's Angel Face," an Iris which was named after Codi prior to her death.

This is an important fundraising event which will allow The Salem Kiwanis Club to continue providing services to charitable causes. Numbered raffle tickets have been printed for this fundraising effort. Tickets are available for $2.00 each. You may contact us via e-mail to arrange purchase and delivery of raffle tickets.

We appreciate your support of our efforts to serve the children of the world, while honoring the memory of one of our own.

THIS QUILT WAS WON BY BILL VAN NATTA IN A DRAWING HELD AT OUR WEEKLY MEETING ON SEPTEMBER 4, 2007.
